about

I heard the first hornpipe from the great Kerry fiddle player Paddy Cronin. The first strain is also shared with “Norfolk Hornpipe [1],” credited to W.H. Whiddon in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (c. 1883), and has similarities to the second strain of “Whiddon’s Hornpipe.” O'Neill (Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies), 1903/1979; No. 1751. O'Neill (Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems), 1907/1986; No. 923, pg. 158. Coleman Center CD CC004, P.J. Hernon, Donal Hernon, Maria Lynn McHugh – “The Mountain Road” (1999. Various artists. “A Compilation of tunes popular in South Sligo”). Coleman Music Center CHC 009, fiddler Michael Creegan (Cloone, Co. Leitrim, died circa 1980’s) – “The Coleman Archive, vol. 2: The Home Place” (2005. Various artists). Shanachie 78004, John Carty – “Yeh, That’s All It Is” (2001).
The second hornpipe I learned from a session recording of Liz Carroll and Billy McComiskey.
The third tune in the set is also known as John Joe Gannon’s. The “Rick’s Hornpipe” title comes from a 1931 recording by the Ballinakill Ceili Band. O'Neill (Dance Music of Ireland:1001 Gems), 1986; No. 940, pg. 161. Source for notated version: fiddler Joe Ryan & harmonica player Eddie Clarke (Ireland) [Breathnach]. Breathnach (CRÉ III), 1985; No. 210, pg. 96. Green Linnet Records SIF 1030, Joe Ryan & Eddie Clark ‑ "Crossroads" (1981).
